How did your FPC certificate help you get to where you are today?

My first job out of school was serving as the first Development Director of a local non-profit where I quickly learned that fundraising, marketing and public relations go hand in hand. Leveraging that and other experiences led me to the position I have today.

What do you enjoy about your current position?

I love overseeing all aspects of a non-profit, knowing that the mission of our organization is helping to make Iowa City, my hometown, one of the best places in the world to live—for all of its residents. I am also driven by sitting at the table with other community leaders to address issues that affect those who are underserved in our community.

What career advice do you have for current NLP students?

Think outside of the box when crafting your resume and applying for jobs--I almost didn’t apply for my current position because I thought I wasn’t qualified. Serve on as many boards and look for volunteer opportunities so that you can identify with those groups you’ll most likely be working with in the non-profit sector. Network, network, network!!!
