They shared their personal stories of discovery, the obstacles they faced, and how they overcame them to achieve their goals. The event was moderated by Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague.

With a focus on the five layers of leadership that exist in any community or organization, and how to harness the power of all leaders, Akwi Nji inspired a re-imagining of our understanding of leadership, success, and failure during her presentation. Critical to building more empathetic, inclusive, and thriving communities is the power to not only unleash our own leadership potential but to recognize that potential and foster it in others.
DEI Guest Speaker Event: A Success Story about a US Nonprofit Serving the Indigenous Mayans of Guatemala
Fondly known as Paco, Juan Francisco Fernandez is the Executive Director of Casa Colibrí––a free medical, pediatric, surgical, dental, optometry, behavioral, and prenatal care clinic in the Northwest part of Guatemala. Paco talks about his experience building and sustaining Casa Colibríto ensure the Guatemalan community has the healthcare they need.

Journalism and Mass Communication major Elianna Novitch '20 talks about her first professional position following graduation and how her journalism degree, role at the Daily Iowan, and the nonprofit certificate prepared her for her first job. As the communications manager at Four Oaks, Elianna is responsible for coordinating and managing internal and external communications for the organization. This includes overseeing public relations and marketing efforts as well as assisting with crisis communication. She is also responsible for graphic design, social media management, email marketing, website management, and storytelling. Elianna provides advice to students about the job search process, suggestions for a healthy work-life balance, and why it's important to say yes to opportunities during their academic career.
Virtual Coffee & Conversation with Emily Collins
Emily Collins ’17 joined us on this episode of Virtual Coffee & Conversation to talk about her whirlwind journey since graduating from UI with a Bachelor of Arts in Ethics and Public Policy, and the Philanthropy Certificate just four and a half years ago. Emily shares her experience traveling to Dublin, Ireland to work for a nonprofit following graduation, and how new graduates can consider freelance as a way to start utilizing their skills right away. Currently, Emily is the Assistant Director of Annual Giving at Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association and is also enrolled in the online Masters of Arts in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Development at the University of Northern Iowa. Hannah was our special guest for the first AFPCC at Iowa Virtual Coffee & Conversation! Hannah graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in May 2021 with a BA in Recreation, Tourism, and Nonprofit Leadership, Nonprofit Management. She also minored in International Affairs, Political Science, and Government. Hannah talked about her experience with nonprofit activities and leadership throughout college and how she launched her career as the new executive director of the Waterloo Schools Foundation.
