The Nonprofit Leadership and Philanthropy (NLP) certificate at the University of Iowa invites nonprofit organizations across the country to become a Community Partner.
An NLP Community Partner is a nonprofit organization eager to collaborate with the UI program in ways that are mutually beneficial. This collaboration ensures that organizations receive substantial assistance from students trained in nonprofit best practices while offering students practical experience to support their educational objectives.
Areas of Collaboration
Internships
Gain assistance with crafting an internship job description, receive feedback on effective strategies to attract interest in your open positions, and leverage the UI Handshake platform to advertise your internships. Your opportunities will be promoted to our students through targeted emails and social media posts, reaching those enrolled in the NLP certificate as well as students taking core nonprofit courses.
Community Engaged Courses
Be a community partner in a Community Engaged Course (CEC). The NLP certificate includes a variety of CEC courses. While each course is distinct, depending on the subject matter and specific community partner projects, nonprofits often discover that instructors integrate classroom concepts into practical projects, where students create deliverables for their nonprofit community partners. These courses create value both for the nonprofit organizations and the participating students.

Hawkeye Nonprofit Collective
The Hawkeye Nonprofit Collective (HNC), sponsored by the NLP certificate, is comprised of dedicated students focused on making a meaningful impact within their community. The HNC leadership acts as a bridge between nonprofit community partners and its members, fostering project-based partnerships that are typically shorter in duration than internships and involve one or more students. For example, a nonprofit needs a) a few HNC members to organize and execute a special event, b) a student to develop a social media content calendar along with multiple campaigns, c) a student to enhance their donor database and reporting processes to streamline fundraising efforts.
